After pizza last night I was accosted by some drunk shouting "f***ing ponytails" and similar endearments at me. I think that's the first time somebody random has verbally abused me about my long hair: certainly I've in general got much less in the way of stick since I grew my hair, maybe because it makes me look older this way.

I was slightly disconcerted because he was walking towards me and getting quite close, but there were plenty of people around and he was obviously incapable so I wasn't actually worried. I cycled off anyway and shouted "drink less" back at him, which was the best rejoinder I could come up with at short notice without sinking to his level.

All very strange.

So, over the weekend I had the Wake on Friday night, which for those who don't know is an annual event organized by Jomsborg the New (the fantasy branch of the Cambridge University Science Fiction Society) staying up all night to celebrate the death of the Jomsborg Old Year and help the Reeve (chairperson, more or less) to raise the sun for the New Year. It's all quite strange and full of nifty invented traditions, and tends to involve a great deal of mead. I was definitely beginning to think we were mad standing on top of Castle Mound in a driving rainy gale winding up the sun, though. :-)

Following the Wake, drying out, and an hour or so dozing on the sofa, [livejournal.com profile] fluffymormegil, [livejournal.com profile] damerell, and I went down to the London rec.games.roguelike.nethack meet, which involved eight hours in a pub and thus was by definition a good thing. Dylan O'Donnell and Ali Harlow were interesting people to meet, too, along with the bunch of Dutch people whose names I didn't manage to catch.

Saturday night was sleeeeeeeep, and lots of it, having had to walk back from the station after nearly 40 hours of more or less no sleep. Sunday evening saw the Tolkien Society radio play auditions, which I've covered. I think that brings us more or less up to date.

Work has felt quite directionless since the beginning of the year, but is beginning to pick up and acquire a bit of coherence again, which should help restore my motivation. Everything else is about as hectic as usual, though fun.
