I never had a base-25 system, but in my teens I invented and still use a base-12 system that similarly counts the segments of the fingers with the same-hand, though in a different order:

top segment of each finger: 1-4
middle segment of each finger: 5-8
bottom segment of each finger: 9-12

(Actually this seems to be basically the same as the East Asian systems Wikipedia talks about, but I invented it independently.)

"but it may have had something to do with being a cellist and therefore occasionally having to count off long rests in a reasonably discreet way that was harder to lose track of than just counting in my head."

I also played stringed instruments in orchestras and used my counting system for similar purposes, though that wasn't why I invented it. It was handy that it naturally divided into multiples of four, and could be quite discreet. (I invented it because I wanted an imaginary society I was inventing to have a base 12 number system, and I figured that was unlikely if they didn't have a finger way to count in it).
