Jan. 15th, 2004 08:19 pmGosh, it's been a while. Um. Where was I?
I think I was somewhere in Christmas. After I got home from visiting family, I had a week or so of constructively doing absolutely nothing (well, almost), which I'd been feeling a lack of recently. At some point I went to see the Return of the King with the Impropriety lot, and loved it: I actually had a lump in my throat for about the last half an hour, and for the lighting of the beacons sequence, which apparently hit all my "epic majesty" buttons. Maybe next time I go to see it - soon, I hope - I'll have room to be cynical. :-)
I even managed to do a bit of cooking, albeit out of a recipe book, when
milchi came to visit on his way to moving into Cambridge, which I think surprised him a bit. I really should actually cook more Stuff.
Um, what else? I went up with a bunch of geeks cheerled by
terryfish to take the Milton Brewery tour. A lot of brewery/distillery tours can be a bit repetitive, but thanks to Richard being a TOTAL NUTCASE this one was pretty entertaining, including comments about hops being only slightly faster growing than cannabis and nefarious uses of this information, and the mysterious "Harry Potter machine" that lives in the middle of the brewing system. (I'd describe it, but by this point he'd handed me a pint of Caligula - 8.8% - and it all gets a bit hazy from there ...)
ghoti and I watched "The Opposite of Sex", which as well as being a kind of romantic comedy of errors was more thought-provoking than I expected it to be, dealing with the conflation of sex and love, which is something I still occasionally trip over and need to kick myself to sort out. Along almost but not quite entirely dissimilar lines I must remember to go and see "Love Actually" before it goes out of cinemas.
All in all it's been a very good start to 2004. Long may it continue!
