Tidying up

It constantly amazes me how many random receipts it's possible to collect. (Some of them are even worse than random: they're debit card receipts that say things like "Goods - See Receipt" on them.) It takes me ages to clear the bloody things out because I feel I have to check each one to make sure it isn't one I actually need to keep or that I didn't use one to scribble a phone number on or something.

Does everyone else just tell the shopkeepers to throw them away on the spot, or is the entire rest of the world also drowning in an enormous pile of receipts and I haven't noticed?

It reminds me of dealing with spam; you clear out the spam folder, ignore it for a week, and when you come back another five hundred of them have accumulated.

I've started typing the amounts from card stubs into a text file, the good intention being to have something I can check statements against, and discarding everything that isn't actually a receipt for something expensive and permanent.
