I've just stayed up until after 4am finishing Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series. Wow. More "children's fiction" should be like this. A gripping plot, plenty of refreshingly close-to-the-bone heresy, and characters I really found myself caring for. I genuinely didn't expect the ending - well, it had occurred to me briefly earlier but I didn't think he'd dare to write it that way. (Look ma, no spoilers!)

Now I need sleep. Zzzzz.

Hmm, I can't remember exactly how it ends, but do remember I was a bit disappointed - had been hoping for something more dramatic!

Ah, yes, the surprisingly unhappy ending. I was quite impressed with that as well.

Now I'm going to have to go and get the other two books - I tore through Northern Lights, but got sidetracked into finishing Pattern Recognition (which I'm very glad I did).
Hrrrmph, there goes my bank holiday ;-)
